Visit Tsarevets Fortress

Historical significance and location

The architectural and museum reserve “Tsarevets” is an emblematic symbol of Veliko Tarnovo and one of the most significant historical sights in Bulgaria. Located on the hill of the same name, the fortress was the political and spiritual center of the Second Bulgarian State (1185-1393), where 22 Bulgarian rulers ruled.

The majestic remains of the fortress today tell the story of medieval Bulgaria and offer visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of past centuries.

What to see in Tsarevets

Imperial Palace
In the heart of the fortress is the impressive royal palace, which occupied an area of 4640 sq.m. The complex included a throne room, royal chambers and numerous administrative premises. Today you can explore the remains of the palace and enjoy panoramic views of the city and the Yantra River.

Patriarchal Cathedral “Ascension of the Lord”
Located on the highest part of the hill, the cathedral was the seat of the Bulgarian patriarch. The restored temple impresses with the unique frescoes of the artist Teofan Sokerov, depicting scenes from Bulgarian history. A breathtaking view of the city opens from the square in front of the cathedral.

Baldwin Tower
Named after the Latin emperor Baldwin of Flanders, who was imprisoned here after his defeat by King Caloyan at the Battle of Adrianople in 1205. According to legend, Baldwin jumped from the tower in an attempt to escape, finding his death in the abyss.

Fortress walls and gates
The fortress was protected by massive walls with a length of more than 1000 meters and a height of up to 12 meters. The main entrance was through the Main Gate, which today has been restored and serves as an entrance for visitors.

Audio-visual performance “Sound and Light”

The unique light and sound performance “Sound and Light” impressively presents key moments of Bulgarian history. Special light and sound effects turn the fortress into a scene of dramatic historical events. The performance is held on a special schedule or by prior request for groups.
