Devetashka Cave

Devetashka Cave is one of the most impressive natural wonders in Bulgaria, located about 70 km from Veliko Tarnovo, near the village of Devetaki. This giant karst cave impresses with its colossal dimensions - a length of 2442 meters, a vault height of up to 60 meters and a total area of 20,400 sq.m.

The most remarkable feature of the cave are the seven huge openings in its ceiling, through which sunlight penetrates and creates a magical play of lights and shadows. These natural windows allow vegetation to thrive inside the cave, creating a unique ecosystem.

Historical significance

Devetashka Cave has been inhabited by people since prehistoric times:

• Archaeological finds prove human presence since the late Paleolithic (about 70,000 years ago)
• During the Neolithic, the cave was the permanent residence of ancient communities
• In the Roman era and the Middle Ages it was used as a refuge
• In the 1950s it served as a warehouse for fuel and materials of the Bulgarian army

Biodiversity

The cave is home to impressive biodiversity:

• 15 species of bats, including rare and protected species
• Unique cave invertebrates
• Varied vegetation around entrances and under natural openings

Hollywood fame

The Cave of Nine gained international fame after serving as the set of Hollywood productions, including the film “The Invincible 2" starring Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
